Russian Short Course Championships: Seventeen Europeans berths earned on Day 3

Eleven finals were contested on the third competition day of the Russian Short Course Swimming Championships in Kazan.

Ten preliminary heats were held during the morning session at the Aquatics Palace, though not without incidents: one swimmer was disqualified while several withdrew from the competition. But there were also athletic accomplishments: Nikolay Snegirev of Moscow set a national junior record in the men’s 400m freestyle event (3:45.98). The evening session featured three semifinal heats.

The finals were action packed and saw several records being broken and a full bunch of berths for the Short Course Europeans being handed out.

“I’m very pleased because I improved my results in two races and qualified for the European championships. I did my job, and my coach is happy with my achievements. Yes, I do love long course more – you have a better chance of catching up with your opponents and speeding up in the final seconds,” said Irina Prikhodko who took silver in the 100m freestyle.

“Yesterday I wanted to improve my personal best because I haven’t shown it at competitions of this level before. Everything turned out just the way I had expected: I gained the lead and finished first. I didn’t know that there are national junior records in short course swimming; they have been announced only yesterday and I didn’t know they have also been included. So, I have yet another national junior record. I’m happy that I shaved two seconds off my last year’s personal best. Now I will do my best to keep it that way. I want to thank my coach for his efforts; we will keep working hard. My main goal for these championships was to qualify for the Europeans and now, after the nationals, we will analyse everything, draw conclusions and start some serious preparation for the European championships,” Anton Chupkov said after the medal ceremony.

“I’m very pleased with the results. Although I expected a better result but what I have reached so far is still very exciting. We have a very strong competition at nationals, and taking first place here is already an achievement. I have met the qualifying time standard as early as in the preliminaries. I had a goal, and my coach and I discussed it several times: I will swim as fast as I can. As for the result, I initially planned to take gold but ran out of my steam during the race and ended up in third place. But it’s no big deal, I will try harder next time,” said Natalia Lovtsova who came third in the 50m butterfly event.
